Family Reunion Weekend

On Friday, July 26, I left with Melanie and Jack and my sister Lisa for Lincoln, Nebraska. We set up the camper at the country home of my first cousin, once removed. Chris sets a new standard for home amenities. When I build my next home it absolutely must have 30 and 50 amp RV hookups near the outbuildings. What convenience!

After a rushed camper set-up, we raced to the 33rd Street Runza to meet up with our (dad’s side) uncle, aunts and their children and grandchildren. So many of them showed up to see us. It warmed my heart. We took a few minutes to run over to the Lincoln Municipal Airport to pick up Dale on his triumphant return from Jamboree. Then we trooped to Uncle Steve & Aunt Carolyn’s house where all the cousins had gathered. Aunt Carolyn provided ice cream sundae fixings and lots of chips and dips. The kids tore all over the back fields and all the grown-ups got to visit. And we had to turn the heat on in the camper overnight.

Saturday morning found us at the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center setting up for the (mom’s side) reunion. Great turnout, good food, crazy cool and pleasant weather. There were some great old pictures to pass around. When I look at pictures, I always notice the toys, furniture, cars, linens, housewares, etc. It’s like antiquing in real life! The kids tore all over the prairie conservation area and all the grown-ups got to visit. The teenagers were profoundly bored until they received the wifi password. We moved the party to Chris’s house for a bonfire and s’mores. And we had to turn the heat on in the camper overnight.

On Sunday we went to church and visited with other cousins. Then we repeated the bonfire and s’mores in Chris’s attempt to rid herself of leftover reunion goodies. The kids cooperated enthusiastically in this endeavor. Three of my little nieces decided to spend the night in my camper. They were very brave (and dry!).

The rain started at about 4am Monday and did not abate, despite our 7am performance of the rain delay ritual, whereby one hits the snooze a few times waiting for the storm to “let up.” No such luck. We put the camper away in the downpour. It will have to be popped up later to dry. Through it all, the little kids were calm and well-behaved. Another blessing.

We visited the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. It was well worth the time and money. It was very kid-friendly and fairly easy to walk, with only a few steep walkways. Many exhibits were inside pavilions so we were not troubled by the cool temperatures and continual drizzle. The muddy shoes, on the other hand, became a big problem when it came to carrying little ones throughout the day. My sister may never wear white jeans again. It was quite traumatic for her, so don’t mention it when you see her.

The Fifth Week Begins

Is there anything better than two days in a row with nothing to do? Nope. Ok, I did have little things to do–wait for a repair man, meet with the insurance adjuster, swimming, movies, a little grocery shopping, gas up the Funvee, hit the going-out-of-business sale at the local fabric store (squeeee!)–but I did all these at my leisure. It was awesome.

Dale made it back to Tampa. He gets one day for laundry and then we pick him up tomorrow in Lincoln. He looks good. The sunglasses are not familiar. Hmm. The sunglasses he left with were mine. I wonder…?

Jack got a slim jim meat snack for helping me with grocery shopping. He got a few bites in, then he said, “Mom! Mom, look!”
I look.

Melanie’s Bizarre Photo Album

This is from Melanie:

These are various times I have played monopoly. Notice a pattern?

Things for Which to Be Grateful

You guys, last night I slept in a bed. This morning I bathed in a tub. I washed my clothes in a high-efficiency washer and dryer. Yes, I have arrived safely, almost blissfully, at my sister’s in Kansas City. My mom’s house also had a washer and dryer, and I was grateful then, too. But she only had the one tub, so I felt guilty thinking about taking a long soak therein.

The biggest change is the bed. For this week, we are not based out of the Death Star, but out of my sister’s guest room. Where there is not a camper bunk, but a twin bed. With a real mattress. Sigh.

Best of all I get to hang out with my brilliant niece (Star Wars nut), my charming nephew (Lord of the Rings fan), my talented and geeky brother-in-law, and my sweet sister, avid reader of YA fiction. For them I am beyond grateful.

Memorable quote of the day:

Jack: So Jackson and I were playing baseball. We did some catching and pitching and crying. I’m just kidding, guys. There’s no crying in baseball. (Tom Hanks geek point!)

Later…

Another tiny adventure…Last night we were zipping through some local neighborhoods to pick up the niece from her activity. Brother-in-law driving, sister in shotgun, me in the back. We had a navigational discrepancy between the two smartphones searching for the destination address. It sparked quite the discussion. We need a word for this type of disagreement. Not that it matters…

but I was right.

25 Year Class Reunion

OK, I did it. I went to the class reunion. Well, one reunion event.

Thanks, Elaine, for finding me the blouse and jewelry. Hair, colored and casually done, check. Make-up, fine, especially good cover on the stress zit that showed up during Wednesday’s adventures. Legs, shaved, in shorts, not skirt, because it’s at a bar and skirts and barstools do not always mix.

I worked the room as though it were full of strangers, mainly because after all this time they are strangers to me. I didn’t stay here in town, didn’t visit much, and I didn’t really think much about that as I got on with my life. Thanks, Jenni for bringing name tags! The ladies were easier to recognize than the gentlemen, perhaps due to the guys’ hairline and facial hair changes, but I think more due to the fact that some of them still looked like boys at graduation and now they look like their dads. We are all older now than most of our teachers were then. How long ago was it?

Ronald Reagan was still president. The Iron Curtain was still firmly drawn. Walter Cronkite and Richard Nixon were still around. OJ was doing commercials and movies. Adele was a two week old baby in England.

And some things don’t change. The kids who drank then were the adults drinking now, albeit legally. I thought about confronting a third grade bully, but decided it wouldn’t make either of us feel better. Some have sadness engraved in their eyes, and some have serenity of spirit that glows from the inside out. Five have passed away. Some have grandkids, many have gray hair. Overall, everyone is quite pleasant, but I don’t feel any more deeply connected to them now than I did in high school. It’s not them. They are very kind. It’s me. If I am not moved with nostalgia at seeing them, then did I come just to be seen? Hm. Did they?

I did get to share a few little things with my kids. We had ice cream and drove around Fisher Fountain on a warm summer evening filled with locust song and lightning bugs. Our campsite is surrounded by corn fields that give a rustling voice to the constant wind. I got to scare them with the mechanized rattlesnake display at the museum, and then watch them scare the next patrons. They watched me savor my hot Runza, though they did not want to try any themselves. They were more than happy to sample pizza with me this afternoon. We visited a couple of my “old” teachers who were great with my kids and reminded me where I learned to enjoy teaching so much.

Now I’ve emptied my schedule, seen the sights, and checked off my list. I am feeling excited to get to my sister’s tomorrow. I’m done here.

Melanie’s Blog: An unexpected journey

Hello! The date is Thursday, July 18, 2013. The time is 12:18am. I am not the usual writer of this blog, but I am her youngest daughter. I’m Melanie. Right now, Henry, Jack, my mother and I are making our way to Hastings, Nebraska, which is why I am writing this blog in her place. My mother is driving, but we’ve got our caffeine to keep us awake until we get there. We are about ten minutes out of Cheyenne, parked at a gas station. Let me tell you, today has been quite…adventurous. So, why was our trip delayed eight hours? I guess I’ll have to start at the beginning.

Tuesday night we put down our pop-up camper around 11:00pm so we didn’t have to do it in the morning. We slept on Idaho Meema’s couches and woke up in the wee hours of the morning. We arose around 5:30am and were on the road by 6:00am. Everything was smooth sailing. But everything changed when the fire nation attacked. (Just kidding) We were 40 minutes out of Blackfoot when there was an overturned traffic cone on the road. Our camper took a beating and the door was knocked open. It wasn’t until our next stop at a gas station that we truly saw the damage.

The door of the camper was not only open, but it was bent in ways that hitting it with a hammer could not fix. We were stuck.

After shuffling around Pocatello, we finally found our way to a place that was willing to fix our step. We drove up to Chubbuck (I couldn’t help but laugh at the silly name) and found ourselves trapped in a waiting room.

Though the damage severe, it was indeed fixable. The employees were very nice and so was the waiting room. There was a nice couch where Jack and I took naps. We waited there for 4.5 hours and finally our step was fixed. It’s still not perfect and we’ve had to keep an eye on it but it should be good for now. So finally, we had a very well deserved lunch at McDonald’s where I had 20 chicken nuggets (with buffalo sauce), a large order of fries, a large coke, and no regrets.

The next portion of our day was a blur to me as I drifted in and out of consciousness. I do remember watching part of Monsters Incorporated with Jack, but only making it to the part where (SPOILERS!) Mike and Sully were banished to the Himalayas. After that we made a stop or two, Jack watched Treasure Planet and then I started to watch The Return of the King: Extended edition. I got part ways through that movie, when I moved to the passenger seat to help keep my mother awake and entertained. We stopped in Little America where Jack got his ice cream and we got to ride on a dinosaur (Don’t worry. It was fake).

We had decided that instead of heading to Greeley, we would just stop in Cheyenne (Which is when we made many jokes about how if we hurried, we could still make Cheyenne). Now we have realized that we should just push forward and head straight to Hastings Nebraska. All the hotels in Cheyenne are booked for Cheyenne Frontier Days. Basically this means we stay up all night driving. We will eventually (hopefully) stop at a motel (instead of popping up the camper at an RV park) in Hastings. Jack and Henry are passed out in the back and Mother and I are running on mountain dew. And now you’re all caught up. We just crossed over into Nebraska (Even though our Garmin wanted to take us to Australia) and are planning on listening to Les Miserables (the movie) to pass the time since we’ve already listened to Romeo and Juliet (The one with Leonardo DiCaprio –swoon-). We are keeping our spirits up and getting closer and closer to our destination with every second. I hope wherever you are, you’re getting better sleep than us! Good night! It’s been fun blogging with you!

Update:

It is 11:06am central time and we finally made it to Hastings Nebraska. Around 5:00am, we stopped at a rest area to sleep for a little while (An hour an a half. That’s a good night’s rest, right?) and the sun came up and woke us up. We continued our journey and made it to Hastings. We set up the camper and are ready for showers and long naps. Good night!

Total miles for the day: 948 miles!?!?!?!

Estimated arrival time in Hastings: 6:57am.

Actual arrival time: Who knows? I’m tired.

Quotes of the day

(While waiting for someone to contact us on where to go to get the camper fixed.)

Melanie (me): Well, we could just loiter at a McDonald’s. They have food and wifi.

Jack: What’s loitering?

Melanie: It’s an illegal thing.

Jack: I’ll do it!

(When Jack pronounced the word “Sorry” like a Canadian)

Melanie: Soory? Did you just pronounce sorry like soory? Are you living a secret, double, Canadian life?

Too far? Never!

Yes, you can be a nerd about Barbie! Until you have to send your husband to Walmart for diapers. He should be allowed to take the man-car. Poor dude!

Three Weeks on the Road

Today marks the 21st day of our trip, the half-way point, if you will. Another three weeks will find us home, or quite close thereunto. I still have a to-do list, since we are making another long haul tomorrow.

laundry (grateful for Mom’s washer & dryer!)
hair color (class reunion on Friday!)
attach solar covers to camper with velcro
wait for Jack to get home from fishing with the guys
wash fish smell off of Jack
clean camper
pack up for tomorrow’s departure

Yesterday I got to get a pedicure and go antiquing with my mom. Three of my favorite things. Also I want to send a thank-you to my sister-in-law Kasey for giving me the cutest almost-two-year-old niece. Thanks for letting us nerd her up yesterday. Now she only answers to Princess Leah.

More of Dale in DC

Dale sent me a photo series called “worst selfies,” from his visit to Washington, DC. Here are two.

And has your kid ever done this? One of those “don’t worry, but…”? This is a picture my son took of fire trucks outside his hotel, which had to be evacuated in the wee hours of the morning, due to a malfunctioning AC system. At least that was the official story.
