Wild Weekend, Nerd Style

On Saturday we dedicated a day to our friend Mindy. We went to breakfast to enjoy her favorite food, bacon. Then we stopped to see our older daughter who was running an open Role Playing Game at the local comic book store. This is Mindy, horrified at being thrust into an RPG against her better judgement.

On Sunday we took the USB and more kids to Idaho to visit Batman’s 97-year-old grandfather. Great way to spend Fathers’ Day!

They Grow Up So Fast

Last night we attended a wedding reception in Bountiful for one of our former students.  Congrats Kasey & Monica!

Here Dale is blocking the setting sun from shining in my eyes. Look how his hair glows!

Spoiling the Kids

With our arrival in Provo we began our long awaited reunion of my offspring. For about 45 minutes yesterday they were all in the same room! Too bad Batman was on an inspection in New Jersey and missed it. By the time we thought about taking a picture, half were ready for naps and the other half had to go to work. We are all going to church on Sunday to hear Kristin’s children’s choir sing for Fathers’ Day, so I have that to which to look forward. Remind me to get a picture…

I got to help Kristin get ready to go to Girls’ Camp, then I got to help Brandon with some costuming needs for Dreamcoat. They’re so independent that I get excited when they let me spoil them.

Great news about the motorhome! Those palm-sized flakes of roof coating that were flapping and flying off the rig all the way from Florida were just a flaking coat of chemically incompatible paint slapped down by a previous owner. Eventually it will all fall off leaving the original roof in pretty good shape. All I’ll have to do is keep it clean!

Birthday on the Road

So Batman turned 50 today. He’s not hanging up the utility belt anytime soon, so we had to celebrate in transit. Birthday lunch at The Big Texan in Amarillo, complete with cowboy serenade, birthday steak coupon, a free hat, and perfect 72 degree weather.

We put a message on the back of the towed vehicle.  It got us lots of honks and waves across north Texas & New Mexico, mostly from people with 50th birthday experience.

Dale got to take a turn at the wheel of the Universal Space Bus.

There was an impromptu dance party on I-40 when “Come On, Eileen” played on Batman’s Road Trip Playlist.

We followed the signs to the Stuckey’s but nearly got stranded when we found the place burned to the ground and the turnaround blocked.

We are ending the day north of Albuquerque watching the Lightning play Game 6 on the RV park cable. Chicago has scored every time I’ve left the RV. I’m grounded.

Oh, dear. Game over.

Yep, Still Texas

Mississippi, the Big River, Louisiana, & Arkansas, all before lunch! Yes, it was a late lunch. Then Texas. 796 miles since we woke up and it will be another 243 miles to New Mexico tomorrow.

The plan is to be in…wait for it…Amarillo by 10:45am so we can celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the birth of our personal Batman. And celebrate we shall, with red meat, and buttered starches garnished with cheese & bacon, and with more red meat, followed by strawberry shortcake (on a biscuit, mind you, not sponge) with inappropriate amounts of whipped cream.

Happy Birthday, Batman!

Day 1 – 570 Miles and 8 Naps

  1. We may have pushed a little hard getting ready. Batman did all the driving and let me sleep for 2 naps. Each kid took 2 or 3 naps during the day and Batman snoozed while we finished a Walmart run. The highlight of the day was dinner with Denise and her sweet babies. I’m looking forward to feeling rested and relaxed without falling asleep on my feet!

Nerdfest Rolls Again!

After a grueling week directing the Cub Scout Day Camp, we came home, cleaned up, and loaded the Universal Space Bus. Now we roll westward! For several days.

First stop, Denise & Family!

From January

A quick trip, our first, to Legoland Florida!

Great story behind this photo. Jack brought some minifigures to trade. While waiting for gates to open, another boy noticed his collection and exclaimed, “Wow, you have the Gold Ninja! Are you trading him? Can we trade?” Jack chose to trade for a plain fig, even though his ninja was of higher value. He traded down just to make another kid happy. A Legoland employee was watching and that’s how Jack got picked to open the park!
